Gen 2 vs Gen 3 Raptor

If you like off-road trucks, there’s no way to avoid the Ford Raptor. You see them on the road, and you immediately know what you're looking at. The design is so distinctive that you can’t ignore it. If, like us, you can’t stop thinking about a Raptor, and you’ve started to compare your options between the second and third generation trucks - we get it. Both generations require a heavy investment on your end, and you want to make the right decision for your build. Both seem like great starting points, so how are you supposed to make that choice?! Great news: IAG Off-Road has already done all the research to help you decide which generation Ford Raptor is right for you, so all you have to do is get building! Let's dive deeper into the differences between the second and third generation Ford Raptors...

GEN 2 VS GEN 3 RAPTOR
EXTERIOR DESIGN

The exterior design of the Ford Raptor is one of its defining features, no matter which generation you’re looking at. The second generation Raptor has a more rugged and aggressive look compared to the third generation. It features an aggressive hood design, bold “FORD” grille, and large fenders that give it a distinctive appearance and allow for functional track width. The second generation Raptor also has a set of distinctive graphics that enhance its look.

However, the third generation Raptor has a more refined and aerodynamic design. It features a larger front skid plate, redesigned hood, and larger fender flares that give it a more modern look. The third generation Raptor also has upgraded Rigid Industries LED lighting and a new set of more aggressive factory wheels that add to its overall appearance.

Whether you go with the second or the third generation in your quest for the perfect off-road truck, though - we’ve got exterior accessories to help make it even better. From improved lighting systems and upgraded fender flares, to storage options and bigger wheels and tires, we can help you go from factory-built killer to a one of a kind truck that’s all your own with just a few clicks.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE

Both the second and third generation Ford Raptor are powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that produces 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. While the second and third generation Raptors use the same 10R80 ten-speed automatic transmission, the third generation claims to include improved transmission tuning that allows for smoother and more efficient shifting. The third generation Raptor also has an improved Terrain Management System with seven different modes, which is a step up from the second generation's Terrain Management System that offered six. This upgraded system allows the driver to adjust the truck's settings with the click of a button, optimizing power management, throttle control, suspension settings and more. With the help of the Raptor’s Terrain Management system, you’re all set for daily driving in “Normal” mode, having a little fun on the pavement with the peppier “sport mode,” or hitting the trails with Slippery, Off-Road, Baja, and Rock Crawl Modes to handle specific surface conditions. If you go for a third gen truck, you’ll also get a Tow/Haul Mode, optimized with powertrain adjustments for more effective towing.

INTERIOR FEATURES

When it comes to the interior, the third generation Raptor takes things up a notch. It features a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Some third generation Raptors also have a heated steering wheel and a wireless charging pad, but be careful if these are high on your list - in 2021, due to supply chain issues, some features were discontinued. Third gen Raptors include a Bang & Olufsen audio system, which is a significant upgrade from the Sony audio system in the second generation Raptor. The third generation Raptor also comes with a range of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Where both generations miss the mark, in our opinion, is in great interior storage options. Thankfully, we have options from the IAG I-Line for that.

OFF-ROAD CAPABILITIES

The Ford Raptor is designed to be an off-road truck, and both the second and third generations deliver exceptional off-road capabilities. The second generation Raptor has a set of Fox Racing Shox with 3.0-inch diameter front shocks that offer 13 inches of suspension travel. The second generation Raptor has a high ground clearance, which makes it ideal for off-roading.

The third generation Raptor, however, has some significant improvements to its off-road capabilities. It has a new five-link rear suspension system that enhances its stability and control when off-roading, and a new set of Fox Racing Shox with Live Valve technology that adjust the shock absorbers' firmness in real-time based on the terrain you’re facing on the trails. The third generation Raptor also has a new Trail Control system that allows for one-pedal driving, even over the most challenging terrain, leaving two-footing over difficult terrain in the past. It allows you as the driver to set and maintain a steady speed when driving off-road.

Pro tip: when it’s time for that first shock rebuild (we’d recommend you handle that at 40,000 miles or so), why not just upgrade? Raptors are amazing off-road trucks, and there’s nothing like them coming straight from the factory. That doesn’t mean we can’t do better. Check out the suspension section at IAG Off-Road, and start planning now. Great suspension may not be cheap, but it’s worth every penny.

PRICE

When it comes to price, the third generation Raptor comes with a higher price tag compared to the second generation. The second generation Raptor had an initial starting price of around $52,000 for the base model, while the current (2023) Raptor has a starting price of just over $78,000. This price increase is justified by the improvements in design, features, and performance of the third generation Raptor.

If you’re shopping between the two, odds are you’re comparing new and used, as of the writing of this, the prices are all over the place - whether you’re shopping for a new third gen, or a used one in either category. Do your research, and don’t get in a hurry. You might even have to hop on a plane to find the best deals. Don’t stress - just enjoy the road trip home with your sweet new rig.

SO... WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?

Ultimately, the choice between the second and third generation Ford Raptor depends on your personal preferences and budget. If you're looking for a truck with a more rugged and aggressive look, then the second generation Raptor is the way to go. The second generation Raptor is also generally a more affordable option compared to the third generation.

However, if you're looking for a truck with a more refined and modern design, the third generation Raptor is the better choice. The third generation Raptor also has a range of more advanced features, including the refinements on the ten-speed automatic transmission, Terrain Management System, and Trail Control system, which makes it a more capable off-road vehicle. The third generation Raptor also has a more luxurious and comfortable interior with advanced safety features and a larger infotainment system.

If you plan to use your Raptor primarily for off-roading in its factory form, the third generation Raptor could be the better choice, thanks to its upgraded suspension system, Live Valve technology, and the mind-bogglingly good Trail Control system.

However, if you're looking for a more budget-friendly rig that can handle both off-roading and daily driving, the second generation Raptor is still a great option - and we can always get you those upgrades - at least on the suspension. Ultimately, the choice between the two comes down to personal preference and budget. Whichever you choose, you'll be getting a powerful and capable truck that can handle anything you throw at it.
