Navigating Safe Water Crossings: Essential Tips for Beginner Off-Roaders

If you're new to the exciting world of off-roading, one skill you'll want to focus on is making it safely through water crossings. Whether you're venturing into muddy trails or crossing a seemingly small stream that somehow turned into a full-on river, knowing how to manage these obstacles is crucial for a safe off-roading experience. We'll guide you through some essential tips and recommend some top-notch products from IAG Off-Road that will help you conquer water crossings with ease.

UNDERSTAND YOUR VEHICLE'S CAPABILITIES

Before you hit the trail, you’ll need to understand your vehicle's capabilities when it comes to water crossings. Not all vehicles are set up to handle deep water, so it's important to know your vehicle's wading depth. If your ride is relatively stock, you might find some info in your owner's manual. If you’re not stock, a quick measurement will do the trick! You can generally use the top of your wheel (not your tire) as a guideline. You’ll be glad you did. Most importantly, make sure you can safely keep your intake and critical electrical components from getting submersed.

SCOUT THE CROSSING

When approaching a water crossing, take the time to scout the area and physically assess the conditions. Yes, this might mean getting a bit wet. It’s never a bad idea to pack waders because a little recon goes a long way to protect your truck from getting waterlogged. Look for any potential hazards like submerged rocks, tree trunks, or deep holes. Additionally, check the water's flow rate and depth. If the water is moving too quickly or is too deep, it may be best to find an alternate route or wait for better conditions.

Just in case the water was deeper than you thought, it’s never a bad idea to have a bit of protection for your vehicle’s exterior. Click here to view some of our body armor and protection options-

PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE

If you know that water crossings are in your future, you should take the time to prepare your vehicle beforehand. Here are a few things to consider-

INTAKE HEIGHT- You may want to raise your intake. Installing a snorkel kit is a smart investment to elevate your vehicle's intake. Snorkels raise the air intake above the water level, preventing water from entering the engine and potentially causing damage or even hydrolocking.

WATERPROOFING- Consider applying a water-resistant coating, if appropriate, to critical electrical systems. These products can help protect your vehicle's vital systems from water damage. You might want to consider wading plugs, fan baffles, or radiator barriers to reduce further water intrusion. It’s unnecessary for most people, but if you’re planning to do a lot of water crossings, or if you frequently wheel where it’s a risk, it’s worth thinking about.

SEAL UP YOUR TRUCK- Inspect your vehicle's doors, windows, and seals to ensure they are properly sealed. Investing in high-quality door and window seals can help keep water out and maintain a dry interior. No one likes a moldy truck carpet!

It's inevitable that you'll track in a bit of mud and water after a day on the trails, but we have the perfect solution. Take a look at our selection of molded interior protector mats here-

HOW TO PULL OFF YOUR FIRST WATER CROSSING

ENGAGE 4WD AND REDUCE SPEED- When crossing a water obstacle, engage your vehicle's four wheel drive system. This will provide better traction and stability. Additionally, reduce your speed to maintain control and reduce the risk of water splashing onto the engine or electrical components.

MAINTAIN A STEADY PACE- As you enter the water crossing, maintain a steady pace without stopping or accelerating abruptly. This technique creates a small bow wave in front of the vehicle, helping to displace water and minimize the chances of water entering the engine bay.

KEEP MOMENTUM- To prevent your vehicle from getting stuck, keep a controlled momentum throughout the water crossing. Gradually increase your speed if necessary, ensuring you don't create a large wave that could flood the engine compartment. Be cautious not to go too fast, as it can cause the water to splash or affect your control of the rig.

DRY YOUR BRAKES- After successfully crossing a water obstacle, your brakes may be less effective due to water saturation. To dry them, gently apply the brakes while continuing to drive. This action will generate heat and friction, helping evaporate any water and restore normal braking performance.

THE WORST CASE SCENARIO

If you find yourself stalled out mid-crossing, don’t attempt to crank your truck again. It’s a quick way to ensure hydrolocking, and an expensive engine rebuild. If you’re taking on challenging water crossings, it’s always best to be with a group, and make sure that there is some good recovery gear on hand (especially a winch), just in case a truck needs to be pulled out.

That said, the worst-case scenario is pretty unlikely, especially when you’re making smart choices and reading the terrain carefully.
