When it comes time to hit the trails, having the right tires can make all the difference in summiting beautiful mountain peaks, crossing rivers, or traversing challenging obstacles with ease. Whether you're a seasoned off-roader or a newbie looking to venture off the beaten path, selecting the right off-road tires is crucial to the performance of your rig. Before you make an expensive mistake, let us walk you through the most important things to consider, and introduce you to some of our favorites from IAG Off-Road.
THE RIGHT TIRES FOR THE JOB
The first thing you want to consider is this- how are you planning to use your truck? Easy weekend trails with good views? Hitting the mud pits with your friends? Flying through the desert every weekend? Do you use your truck to get to and from work every day? All of these things should factor into your decision so that you end up with the right tires for the job. IAG Off-Road carries many various types of off-road tires, each one designed to excel in certain conditions. Here are a few of the most common tire types to consider-

ALL-TERRAIN (A/T) TIRES
If you’re a weekend warrior looking for a jack-of-all-trades tire that can get you to the office, as well as to a remote campsite on the weekend, this one’s for you. All-Terrain tires, as the name implies, are versatile and suitable for both on-road and off-road use. A/Ts perform well in light mud, gravel, and rocky terrain, striking a good balance between traction and comfort, no matter what you want to tackle in your truck.

MUD-TERRAIN (M/T) TIRES
If you frequently tackle deep mud, sticky surfaces or wet terrain, mud-terrain tires are your best bet. With aggressive tread patterns and large voids between lugs, they provide excellent traction, even on the sloppiest trails. One of our favorite mud terrain tires on the market is the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss, which features a robust sidewall and asymmetric tread pattern to keep the tread blocks cleaned out working at their full potential.

ROCK-CRAWLING TIRES
Specifically designed for extreme rocky terrain, rock-crawling tires, also known as “rugged terrain” tires feature reinforced sidewalls and a sturdier construction than an all-terrain or mud-terrain option. Their exceptional grip and puncture resistance allow for precise control over jagged surfaces.

TREAD PATTERN AND DEPTH
The tread pattern of off-road tires plays a vital role in determining their performance. Look for deep and aggressive tread patterns that can dig into the terrain, providing enhanced traction and self-cleaning capabilities. Wide voids between lugs allow mud and debris to be expelled, ensuring consistent grip.
While off-road tires are designed to be durable and rugged, their aggressive tread pattern can also lead to tons of road noise. Some models offer a quieter and smoother on-road experience. If you frequently drive on highways or urban roads, consider tires with noise reduction features. These specialty tires are designed to reduce noise on the road, without sacrificing function when you need it most.
Tread pattern and depth can also drastically impact your traction; there is a tread pattern for every circumstance. Manufacturing technologies have made way for innovations like multi-angle sipes and biting edges for increased grip on slippery surfaces. Features like these can start to sound like marketing ploys, but have a huge impact on how your tires function.

TIRE SIZE AND LOAD RATING
Choosing the right tire size is essential for optimal performance and safety, not to mention actually getting them to fit on your truck. Don’t assume you can just upsize wheels and tires without rubbing. You might need to look at options for lifting your rig if you go too far outside of the factory standards, and that could involve a bit of modification in some cases.
Lastly, think about load rating when you’re shopping for tires, which indicates the maximum weight each tire can support. Make sure you choose a tire that can support not only your truck, but any additional cargo you might want to take with you on the trails.

DURABILITY AND CONSTRUCTION
Off-road tires need to withstand the rigors of rough terrain, so durability is crucial. Look for tires with reinforced sidewalls to resist cuts and punctures. High-quality construction materials such as Kevlar or nylon can increase the tire’s strength without compromising flexibility. Different manufacturers build their sidewalls with different plies, different technology, and different materials; read up on them and figure out what makes sense for you and how you intend to use your rig.
